Career

Steffen Schön, born in 1974, began his professional career in 2000 after studying surveying (University of Karlsruhe and Ecole Nationale des Sciences Géographiques, Paris) as a research assistant at the Geodetic Institute of the University of Karlsruhe, where he obtained his doctorate in 2003.

After positions at the German Geodetic Research Institute (DGFI) in Munich (2002-2004) and Graz University of Technology (Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, 2004-2006), he was appointed to the professorship of Positioning and Navigation at the Institute of Geodesy at Leibniz University Hannover in 2006. Between 2013 and 2026, he was Dean of Studies responsible for geodesy and geoinformatics.

His research and teaching focus on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), secure urban navigation and the development of alternative PNT (positioning, navigation and timing) methods.

On 1 March 2026, he was appointed President of the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy.
